About Black Mountain

Black Mountain sits in Buncombe County in the Swannanoa Valley, the first town you reach after climbing the Blue Ridge on I-40 from the east. Explore Asheville describes a walkable downtown of independent shops, galleries and restaurants.

The town runs Lake Tomahawk Park (16.3 acres around an 8.9-acre lake), the downtown Town Square with a warm-weather splash pad, and seven short greenway paths. Hurricane Helene damaged Veterans Park in 2024: the front nine of its disc golf course and the Oaks Trail Greenway were still closed when we checked.

Anything marked “Not confirmed” was not stated on an official page when we looked on November 3, 2026. Check with the town, park or organizer before you go.

Getting There

From Uptown Charlotte: about 2 h 21 min, 111 miles. From downtown Asheville: about 23 min, 16 miles. Black Mountain is on I-40 east of Asheville, the main road in from Charlotte by way of Hickory and Morganton.

Drive times are estimates, not official figures. We computed them on November 3, 2026 from OpenStreetMap road data (OSRM routing) with no traffic. Rush hour on I-77, I-85 and I-40, weekend lake and leaf traffic, weather and construction all add time.
