North Carolina events › Answers › Best Time for Fall Color in North Carolina
No official page gives one date for peak fall color. The National Park Service says most trees along the Blue Ridge Parkway change during October, starting on the highest peaks and moving down, and VisitNC gives timing by region: late September through late October in the High Country, with Asheville’s downtown and DuPont State Forest turning late October into early November.

What The Official Pages Say
| Page | What It Says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| NPS: October timing | At higher elevations, where the climate is similar to New England's, scattered trees sometimes begin developing fall color as early as late-September. However, the majority of trees typically change color during the month of October, starting early in the month on the highest peaks and progressing down the mountainsides into the lower elevations as the month passes. | page |
| NPS: conditions for best color | The "best" fall color for an area occurs during the shortening days of autumn when days are bright, sunny and cool, when nights are cool but not below freezing, and when there has been ideal rainfall. | page |
| VisitNC: High Country | Color runs from late September through late October, starting on Grandfather Mountain and moving downhill to Boone, Blowing Rock and nearby valleys. | page |
| VisitNC: Asheville & The Foothills | Color usually starts at Max Patch and Craggy Gardens in early October, peaks in Pisgah National Forest and Montreat in mid-October, and reaches downtown Asheville and DuPont State Forest from late October into early November. | page |
| VisitNC: Smoky Mountains & Cherokee | First color at Kuwohi in late September; by mid-October the ridges near Waynesville, Maggie Valley and Waterrock Knob peak, then color moves into the southwest valleys in early November. | page |

Parkway sections close for weather and repair. Read is the Blue Ridge Parkway open and the NPS road status page on the day you go. Mount Mitchell State Park warns that winter closures can be long.

When is peak fall color in the North Carolina mountains?
There is no single date. The NPS says the intensity and time of peak color depend on weather and the trees, and VisitNC describes late September through early November across the regions, higher ground first.
Which park should I visit first for color?
By the NPS statement, the highest peaks change first. Mount Mitchell (6,684 feet) and Grandfather Mountain’s Calloway Peak (5,946 feet) are the highest elevations our park pages print.
What We Could Not Confirm
- No official page we read gives a date for peak color this year; the NPS page is from 2021 and the VisitNC page carries no update date.
- Pilot Mountain and Stone Mountain print no elevation on their park pages, so none is shown.
