Recreation of any kind is prohibited in that section. Status changes, sometimes daily; check the NPS page on the day you drive.

Why is part of the Blue Ridge Parkway closed?
The NPS gives “Helene related closure” as the reason for the closed section north of Mount Mitchell and for the Linville Falls and Crabtree Falls closures. The single-lane closures in the High Country are for road work, not storm damage. The park also says weather, construction, maintenance and emergencies can close sections at short notice, and that sections marked “ungated” are open except in emergencies.
Can you drive the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mount Mitchell?
From the south, yes: the parkway is open from Asheville north past Craggy Gardens to NC Highway 128 and Mount Mitchell State Park (milepost 355.3), which the NPS lists as open. From the north you cannot stay on the parkway, because milepost 344.2 to 355.3 is closed; use the NPS detour map on the road status page to plan around it.
Is the Blue Ridge Parkway open near Asheville and Boone?
- Asheville: open from Craggy Gardens through the Folk Art Center, the park headquarters and visitor center, past I-40 and US 25 to the Pisgah Inn and campground, Graveyard Fields and Black Balsam, as of Oct 27. A contractor is running short daytime single-lane closures between US 25 and NC 191.

How do you check the parkway before you go?
