State Park Pet Rules
| Topic | Rule as Printed |
|---|---|
| Leash | Pets are permitted in all state parks as long as they are on an attended leash or other restraint of no longer than 6 feet and under the constant control of the owner. Pet owners who do not have their pets on a leash may receive a fine. |
| Trails | Pets should stay on the trail. Visitors with pets should yield to all other trail users, including bicyclists and equestrians, when possible. |
| Camping and Buildings | Pets are allowed in most state park campgrounds. Overnight, pets must be confined to the owner's tent or vehicle during quiet hours. Pets are not permitted in cabins. Pets are not allowed in the bathhouses or swimming areas. Pets are strictly prohibited from entering any building. Owners may be asked to remove dangerous or noisy pets from the state park. |
| Waste | Pet owners should pick up after their pets. Properly dispose of pet waste in garbage bins. Do not throw waste bags in the woods or leave them on the ground. |

Beaches and National Seashore
- Cape Hatteras National Seashore: pets. Your pet must be on a 6' leash at all times and are prohibited within any resource closure. Pets are not allowed on designated swim beaches or in buildings. Please, for your pet's sake, never leave them unattended. Also, for everyone's and the environment's sake, clean up after your pet. source
- Jockey's Ridge State Park: pets. Pets are allowed at the park, except they are not permitted inside buildings. Due to hot sand and sandspurs, we recommend protection for paws; sand temperatures may be as much as 30 degrees higher than air temperatures. Pets must be on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet at all times. source
