A Note
The National Park Service says the tower is not open for climbing in 2026 because of restoration; the grounds are open. Check the park's official page before a trip.

Looked for and Not Found
- No NPS or NCpedia page we read uses the phrase "barber pole".
- The NPS Light Station page says there is no evidence for the story that a bureaucratic error caused the stripes. PBS repeats that story as something some accounts say; we did not use PBS as proof.
- Source figures differ slightly: the move page says the tower now sits about 1,600 feet from the ocean and the move began June 17 and ended July 9, while the Light Station page says 1,500 feet and 23 days. Use dates and distances with that note.
