How we checked: the Carolina Raptor Center, NC State Parks and U.S. National Whitewater Center pages, plus the sources of the three-day plan. Road times between stops are road time computed from OpenStreetMap routing, not live traffic. All read on November 3, 2026. Hours, prices, rules, closures and road status change, so check the named agency or business before you rely on them. Anything we could not read is marked Not confirmed where it appears. General guidance on this page is labelled as general guidance. This is not safety, medical or legal advice; where a safety or legal rule appears, the quoted words are the official source’s own.
Days One to Three
Follow the three-day plan: Discovery Place Science and Carowinds, Crowders Mountain, then the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Mint Museum and South End. Our Charlotte Weekend page is days one and two.
Why This Is Day Four
The north-of-the-city day is the one with a hard calendar limit, which is why it comes last. The Raptor Center says its Raptor Trail is open seven days a week, but it also lists upcoming closures: Saturday, November 7; Monday, November 16; Tuesday, November 17; and Thursday, November 26. Pick a date that avoids all four, then plan the rest around it.
The drives are short enough to keep the day easy. The Raptor Center is 29 minutes from Charlotte on our drive times data. The hop to Lake Norman State Park is about 50 minutes and 29.9 miles by road, under our 80-minute limit. The optional Whitewater Center stop adds another 56 minutes from Lake Norman, so we mark it optional: with it, the three stops and the two hops come to about 5 hours 30 minutes on site and 1 hour 46 minutes on the road by our planning estimates, before the drive from the city and the way back. The way back is not computed: Not confirmed
Day 4: Huntersville and Lake Norman
- Getting thereCarolina Raptor Center is 29 minutes from Charlotte, an estimate on our drive times data.
- Stop 1: Carolina Raptor Center6000 Sample Road, Huntersville, NC 28078; it is always free to park, per the Center. The Raptor Trail is open seven days a week 10 am to 4 pm. - Stop 2: Lake Norman State Park759 State Park Road, Troutman, NC 28166. About 50 minutes and 29.9 miles from the Raptor Center (road time computed from OpenStreetMap routing, not live traffic). No fee for day use. November day-use hours are 7 am to 6 pm and the park is closed on Christmas Day. The park lists the visitor center at 9 am to 5 pm every day in one place and Friday to Tuesday in another, so confirm: Not confirmed Our Lake Norman page | NC State Parks
- Stop 3 (Optional): U.S. National Whitewater CenterAbout 56 minutes and 38.4 miles from Lake Norman State Park (road time computed from OpenStreetMap routing, not live traffic). Its home page showed guest services 8 am to 8:30 pm on the day we read it and trails open. Admission, activity prices and winter hours: Not confirmed U.S. National Whitewater Center
Pacing Day Four
The Raptor Trail is a three-quarter-mile walk in Latta Nature Preserve with more than 30 avian ambassadors, and the Center says visitor programs are included in admission. It opens at 10 am and the trail closes at 4 pm, so it sets the clock: reach Huntersville by 10 and give it about two hours. Lake Norman State Park follows. NC State Parks describes the Itusi Trail as nearly 31 miles of single-track for mountain biking and the park as covering about 17 miles of the northern shoreline of the state’s largest manmade lake; the park’s hiking trails were listed open 7 am to 7:30 pm on the day we read the page. Heron rookeries on two islands hold over 25 great blue heron nests, per the park.
Day-use hours in November are 7 am to 6 pm, so the park is the stop to cut short if the Raptor Center runs long. Boats can be rented in some seasons, but the rental information on the park page is out of date, so do not plan around it.

This is general guidance. On a wet day, swap day four with an indoor stop from day three. The Raptor Center asks visitors to follow its Raptor Trail guidelines; its weather policy: Not confirmed
