The NPS list heading says North Carolina (40) but prints 41 entries, because the Josephus Daniels House designation was withdrawn on 09/02/24; our list has the 40 active landmarks.

What a National Historic Landmark Is

National Historic Landmarks are places the Secretary of the Interior designates as nationally significant in American history. The National Park Service runs the program. A landmark can be privately owned, so being on this list does not mean it is open; the Open to visitors column says what the owner’s or the National Park Service’s page states.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many National Historic Landmarks are in North Carolina?

The National Park Service lists 40 National Historic Landmarks in North Carolina. Its list prints a 41st entry, the Josephus Daniels House, but marks that designation as withdrawn on September 2, 2024. The Blue Ridge Parkway landmark is shared with Virginia (source: NPS: List of NHLs by State).

What are North Carolina’s newest National Historic Landmarks?

The two newest are the Blue Ridge Parkway and the F. W. Woolworth Company Building in Greensboro, site of the 1960 sit-ins, both designated on December 13, 2024. Before them came the Pauli Murray Family Home in Durham, designated December 23, 2016 (source: NPS: List of NHLs by State).

Can I visit North Carolina’s National Historic Landmarks?

Many of them. Our list marks 22 of the 40 as open to visitors, such as Biltmore Estate, Old Salem and the State Capitol, and 6 as partly open. Two cannot be visited (the restricted Hardaway Site and USS Monitor), and 10 are private or unconfirmed (source: NPS: List of NHLs by State).
