Roads, parks and trails change by the hour. These are the official pages to open on the day you travel. We link to them rather than copy them. This page shows no alert banner today; any banner we add carries a start and end date and hides itself after it, and we embed no webcams.

Winter Driving Checklist

This checklist follows the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s own winter driving page, which is dated May 8, 2026. It is general road safety, not advice for any one trip. The department’s first tip is not to go out unless you really have to.

StepWhat the Department Says
Before You DriveMake sure the vehicle runs well. Keep an ice scraper, snow brush, extra washer fluid, antifreeze, jumper cables and flares. For a breakdown, add a flashlight, first-aid kit, blanket, shovel, sand, non-perishable snacks and water. Keep at least a half tank of gas.
Allow Time and Slow DownSlow down, keep a safe following distance and pass with care. The page names speeding as the top cause of winter wrecks.
Drive SmoothlyDo not use cruise control, and avoid sudden acceleration, braking or turns.
Bridges and OverpassesThey ice first. Approach with care and do not brake on a bridge.
Dark Traffic LightsTreat an intersection with dark lights as a four-way stop.
Clear the VehicleClear snow and ice from all windows, mirrors, the roof, hood, trunk, bumper and lights.
Black IceIt looks like wet spots and forms when melted snow and ice refreeze. Avoid driving if possible; if you must, go slowly and leave extra space.
If You SlideStay calm, lift off the gas and steer into the slide. Avoid braking; if you must, brake gently.
If You Get StuckDo not spin the wheels. Clear snow around the tires and spread sand, cat litter or salt for traction.

Read the full page on the department’s site, and check DriveNC for roads affected by ice and snow.

Travel Responsibly

North Carolina State Parks teaches the seven Leave No Trace principles with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and Outdoor NC. Its page lists them as:

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
  2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly
  4. Leave What You Find
  5. Minimize Campfire Impacts
  6. Respect Wildlife
  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors

The page adds that camping at North Carolina state parks is allowed only at designated campsites. Read the wording on the state parks page. For park rules on dogs, see Dog-Friendly State Parks; for bears and other animals, see Wildlife.
