What The Triangle Is

The Triangle is the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill region of central North Carolina. Research Triangle Park’s own history page says that “by the 1990s, the entire Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill region had begun to be referred to as ‘The Research Triangle,'” after its three universities: NC State in Raleigh, Duke in Durham and UNC in Chapel Hill. Cary, the region’s next-largest town, calls itself “at the heart of central North Carolina’s renowned Triangle region.”

Research Triangle Park sits in the middle. It was founded in 1959, covers 7,000 acres and is managed by the Research Triangle Foundation, which calls it “the largest research park in the United States.” Its history page says North Carolina then ranked “47th out of 48 in the nation in per capita income,” and the park was the state’s answer.

Not confirmed: an official list of which counties make up the Triangle region. The regional partnership’s site did not answer our reader on November 3, 2026, so we do not print a county count; this guide covers Wake, Durham, Orange, Chatham, Johnston and Lee towns.

About these numbers: populations for 2025 are Census Bureau estimates (Vintage 2025, July 1, 2025), not counts. Growth is measured from the Census estimates base for April 1, 2020, so it can differ from the raw 2020 census count, and it includes land a town annexed after 2020, not only people moving in. Drive times are estimates routed on OpenStreetMap roads with no traffic, from each town’s Census map point; rush hour is often much slower.

Why The Triangle Is Growing

Wake County, home to Raleigh and most of the growth towns, reached an estimated 1,257,235 people in July 2025, +11.3% since April 2020 (Census Bureau estimate). The fastest growth is in the outer towns: Census estimates put Fuquay-Varina up 41.6%, Apex up 24.9% and Holly Springs up 21.9% since 2020, against 8.2% for Raleigh.

The towns say it themselves. Cary’s history page credits Research Triangle Park: “With the development of Research Triangle Park in the 1960s, Cary grew from a quiet town of a few thousand people to a booming bedroom community.” Fuquay-Varina calls itself “one of the fastest-growing small towns in North Carolina,” and Wake Forest describes “explosive growth in its population” since the 1990s.
