Ghost Stories Told About The Battleship North Carolina

People tell of a young sailor said to be seen in a washroom where a shipmate was killed in the war, and of shadowy figures at portholes, doors that open and close, and the sound of running feet. According to a state tourism list, these are the sightings people report aboard the ship.

What The Sources Document

The ship's official FAQ page says the Battleship is a 'popular destination for paranormal investigation groups' and that paranormal programs are run by outside organizations, not by the ship; the official site tells no ghost story. The detailed stories we found come from one secondary source: a VisitNC list, 'Things That Go Bump in the Night: 8 Haunted Places in North Carolina' (byline Shayla Martin, no date shown). According to it, a Japanese torpedo hit killed five men, a young soldier killed in the washroom is said to have been seen there, and others report apparitions in passageways, shadowy figures at portholes, doors opening and closing on their own, and running sounds. That list names no witnesses, investigators, or records, so we cannot document any of it. We found no ghost claim in the ship's own history pages beyond the FAQ line, and have no archive or university source for the claims. The battleship's official site documents the real history: the ship took part in every major Pacific naval offensive of World War II, earned 15 battle stars, and serves as North Carolina's World War II memorial to 11,000-plus state residents who died in the war. NC DNCR's 'North Carolina's Most Haunted' post (Brandon Goins, October 30, 2018) does not mention the ship.

A Note

The ship is a war memorial to the men who served and to those lost. Every sighting here is given only as 'according to' a named list. The ship's own website does not tell ghost stories, and we found no archive or university source documenting them.
