North Carolina events › Itineraries › Asheville And The Mountains In Four Days

Short answer: Four days adds a train day to the three-day plan: the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad from Bryson City, 70 minutes from Asheville. Its Nantahala Gorge Excursion is a 4½-hour, 44-mile round trip with a one-hour layover, per the railroad. Gorges State Park is the swap if the train does not run on your date.

How we checked: the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and NC State Parks pages, plus the sources of the three-day plan. Road times between stops are road time computed from OpenStreetMap routing, not live traffic. All read on November 3, 2026. Hours, prices, rules, closures and road status change, so check the named agency or business before you rely on them. Anything we could not read is marked Not confirmed where it appears. General guidance on this page is labelled as general guidance. This is not safety, medical or legal advice; where a safety or legal rule appears, the quoted words are the official source’s own.

Days One to Three

Follow the three-day plan: Biltmore and the WNC Nature Center, Chimney Rock, then downtown Asheville and the River Arts District. Our Asheville Weekend page is days one and two.

Why The Train Is Day Four

Days one to three keep you within an hour of Asheville. The train day is the one that needs an early start: you drive 70 minutes to Bryson City, ride, and drive back. Add the 4½-hour excursion to two drives of 70 minutes and the day runs about 6 hours 50 minutes before meals, well inside our 9-hour limit for a day. Both are our estimates, built from the railroad’s stated ride length and the 70-minute measured drive on our drive times page.

The railroad offers more than one ride. It names a Nantahala Gorge Excursion and a Tuckasegee River Excursion on its home page. We did not read a November timetable or fares, so choose your ride on the railroad’s own calendar before you drive. Do not count on the train on a day you have not booked.

Day 4: Great Smoky Mountains Railroad From Bryson City

  • Getting thereBryson City is 70 minutes (54.0 miles) from Asheville, the Google Maps time our drive times page read on October 18, 2026. That is under our 80-minute limit for one drive.
  • Stop 1: Bryson City DepotThe railroad says its depot is in the heart of Bryson City. Our railroad page | Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
  • Stop 2: Nantahala Gorge ExcursionA 4½-hour round trip of 44 miles with a one-hour layover at the gorge, per the railroad. Departure times and fares for your date: Not confirmed
  • Stop 3: Tuckasegee River ExcursionThe railroad describes a ride along the Tuckasegee River with a one-hour-and-20-minute layover in Dillsboro. Pick this or the Nantahala excursion, not both. Whether it runs on your date: Not confirmed
  • Stop 4: Holiday OptionThe railroad says tickets for THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride are on sale for 2026. Our Polar Express page.

Day 4: Alternative: Gorges State Park

  • WhyChoose this if the train does not run on your date. Gorges is about 65 minutes from Asheville (an estimate from OpenStreetMap routing scaled to Google Maps times, on our drive times data).
  • Visitor Center976 Grassy Ridge Road, Sapphire, NC 28774; open daily 9 am to 5 pm, per NC State Parks.
  • Park HoursNovember: 7 am to 8 pm. The park is closed on Christmas Day. No fee for day use, per NC State Parks. Our Gorges page.
  • WaterfallsNC State Parks asks visitors to follow safety rules near waterfalls. Which trails and falls are open: Not confirmed

What to Book Ahead

  • The train: book on the railroad’s own calendar. It is the one stop in this plan we would not leave to chance. Fares: Not confirmed
  • Days one to three: see the booking list on the three-day plan.

If It Rains

The railroad has not told us what it does in rain, and we will not guess: Not confirmed Gorges State Park is an outdoor day, so on a wet day swap in the Biltmore House, Wolfe Memorial and Art Museum from the three-day plan. This is general guidance.

Planning The Train Day

The railroad says its round trips let you see places you cannot reach by car, with views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Nantahala National Forest and Fontana Lake. That is the reason to spend a day on it rather than another drive. Bring the day’s plan down to one fixed point, the departure time, and set everything else around it: arrive early enough to park and collect tickets, and do not schedule anything for the evening you return.

If you prefer to keep moving, Gorges State Park is the other choice. It has no day-use fee and the park lists 26 waterfalls and 56 miles of hiking trails. NC State Parks asks visitors to follow safety rules near waterfall areas, and it keeps a bear-safety page; read both before you hike. The park is closed on Christmas Day and open on all other holidays. The drive is about 65 minutes by an estimate on our drive times data, so it is longer than any day-two or day-three hop but still within our 80-minute limit.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is not a stop in this plan. Parkway closures change daily and we state none here. Read Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville and check Travel Alerts before you add a Parkway drive to any day.
